The Keto Diet – Jonny Bowden, PhD, CNS, (aka “The Nutrition Myth Buster”)

[Music] hey everybody its dr. Johnny Boden today I’m going to give you the quick down and dirty on the keto diet now first of all let me say this there is a ton of great information out there on the keto diet much more detailed than this I’ve written some articles myself if you put my name in and keto diet you’ll see some of them but there’s a lot of really good information so this is really a basic 1-minute course for people who really don’t know what it is and just want to be able to separate the junk from the reality so basically a ketogenic diet is one that produces ketones in your body genic Leica’s in genesis making new keto for ketones so you might ask well why do i want to make ketones and what difference would it make if my body’s making them because they are a product of fat burning so you only really make ketones when you’re burning fat so basically a ketogenic diet is a diet that induces fat burning and how do you know that you’re burning fat you can measure them in your blood your breath in your urine so there’s three different methods now how you do it and what you do in all the variations is way too much for this short video I have a book called living low carb it’s coming out in a brand new edition in January of 20 honey 1 we put a huge section in on keto all the different variations and maybe I’ll do some more videos on it but for now I just want you to understand that all it is is a diet that forces your body to produce ketones now you produce ketones normally like when you sleep any coming at you fast really you’re producing ketones but the problem is your body’s not really using them for energy because there’s so much glucose so much sugar in the system the way you trick your body into using those ketones for fuel is to go very low carb and that’s really the way that you produce ketones and when the body doesn’t have that glucose around guess what it starts using ketones which means it’s burning fat and why is this a good thing because the heart the brain the skeletal system love ketones it’s a wonderful form of an now is it a little tricky to get into ketosis and to maybe make that transition yes it would be as if you took all the junk food out of your refrigerator and your cupboard and your kid is going like there’s nothing here to eat and they go crazy for a couple days but eventually they got hungry enough and all you had was like grass-fed beef and broccoli and string cheese and good stuff err they’d eventually learn to like it and they’d actually thrive on it and they’d actually do even better than you could imagine but there’s that transition period and people call that the keto flu it’s that period of adaptation when your body goes oh there’s really not much sugar coming down here we better give up on the sugar and we better switch to this wonderful source of fuel that’s made when the body dips into the fat stores and starts burning fat for energy and producing as I said ketones and that’s what a ketogenic diet is this is Johnny Boden if you liked this please hit the like button subscribe to the channel and I’ll see you next time [Music] you
