Minimalist Bearded Dragon Setup: Cheap but effective

Minimalist Bearded Dragon Setup: Cheap but effective

what’s going on everyone my name is Richie and in this video I’m gonna be going over my minimalistic beauty dragon setup and accessories so let’s get right to it so as we pan out you can see the enclosure that you’re gonna need now this is equivalent to a 40 gallon breeder and in my opinion that’s the minimum required size to house an adult bearded dragon this enclosure is built by a company called EXO Tara and it’s about 36 inches long 18 inches high and 18 inches wide what I like about this enclosure is that it has front facing doors so it makes it easy and convenient for you to access your bearded dragon and its enclosure especially if you want to handle your bearded dragon daily this saves you the hassle of having to remove the lights and the lid in order to get access to your bearded dragon and then having to put the lights in the lid back on top of your enclosure the next thing I want to talk about is the price of this enclosure this enclosure can run you anywhere from two hundred and three hundred dollars brand-new if you can get it used that would be a better option but in my opinion yes it is pricey but it makes it really convenient and easy for me to access the inside of my enclosure and my bearded dragon the next thing I want to talk about is the bearded dragon itself so unless you’re getting a morph we got Pikachu here for a really good price we got them for about thirty-five dollars now I’m morph will be more money but Pikachu is so tame docile me and my fiance will take him out and put him on our lap while we watch a TV show or a movie and he’ll fall asleep on a lap like a puppy dog now he’s not a morph but as you can see here he has some nice patterns you know I’m happy with him I think he’s beautiful and I wouldn’t trade it for anything else I love this little guy the next thing I want to talk about is the substrate so when you do a minimalistic setup you want something that’s cheap and easy to clean and that’s this right here it looks like tile but it’s actually soft to the touch and and what’s awesome about this stuff which is cabinet liner by the way so it’s like linoleum what’s awesome about this stuff is that you can shape and fit it to the exact dimensions of your enclosure as you can see here with a little pressure the space is open up and you can literally tear this by hand and shape it and fit it to the size of your enclosure a roll of this is about 10 bucks and you can get it on Amazon it comes wrapped up like this it’s by a company called contact and it’s called zip and fit ten bucks on Amazon check it out the next thing I want to talk about is the water dish now look long and short if your water dish is not negatively effecting the humidity levels inside your enclosure you’re gonna be okay however if you live in a place that has high humidity and you notice that your humidity levels are rising you may want to downsize your water dish or remove it and find a different way to hydrate your bearded dragon they have videos on how to do that on YouTube because when humidity gets too high in your beauty’s enclosure your breathe it in your bearded dragon can suffer from respiratory infections and it can be fatal all right so the next accessory I want to talk about is a Basking platform this right here is a reptile rock by the company Zilla and it’s pretty good as it conducts a nice amount of heat but I don’t like how low it is to the ground so it’s pretty far from his basking lamp and we’re gonna get rid of this tomorrow cuz we’re gonna go completely bioactive and we’re going to be replacing all the non organic material like this we’re gonna be replacing it with cork flats cork bark great ghost and driftwood and we’re gonna build him a nice sized Basking platform that’s closer to his basking lamp and you should do the same so long and short I would go with a higher batting platform than this or you’re gonna have to use higher wattage in your basket lamp all right so now that we talked about what’s inside the tank talk about the important lighting on top of the tank so this right here is a UVB light fixture and UVB light bulb by zoomin it is a t5 light fixture and it houses a t5 rep the Sun UVB light bulb TenPoint oh the 10-point o stands for 10% so it delivers 10 for 10 percent UVB for your bearded dragon which is important because UVB allows Pikachu to produce more vitamin D which will allow him to store calcium in his bones so he doesn’t get metabolic bone disease now a lot of bearded dragon owners who are beginners and uninformed will not provide adequate UVB lights for their bearded dragons and their bearded dragons will often suffer a metabolic bone disease which in some cases can be irreversible and fatal let’s talk about this basking lamp right here it’s by zoo Med another cool design I love this because it’s convenient and I basically get two lights instead of one so I have it’s daytime light here and it’s nighttime infrared light here back in the day what I used to do was have two different lamps or I would use one lamp and switch out the nut the light when it was time for my reptile to go to bed this is super convenient the next thing we can talk about is the background so from a cosmetic standpoint backgrounds look great for the animal for your bearded dragons health they say putting a background is good because it helps to mitigate reflection now that’s somewhat true but you can still see reflection in here and at times you will see his reflection and glass surf which can be stressful for your bearded dragon but as you can see here we’re talking I’m yapping away I’m filming and he’s chilling I mean he’s not puffing out his beard or turning black or anything like that and like I said he usually seems pretty common we take him out but that being said I will be upgrading my enclosure to an enclosure made by the company called cages and they make PVC enclosures and these enclosures are full P I believe they’re full PVC and they do not have glass backgrounds so the backgrounds are black and white so your beauty dragon won’t see its reflection now let’s talk about the diet you’re gonna need so when your bearded dragons a juvenile like Pikachu so we got him at 3 months old he’s now five and a half months when they’re at this age they mostly eat insects seventy percent of the diet is about insects the rest is dark leafy greens which he loves the dark leafy greens I feed him our collard greens dandelion greens Swiss chard and occasionally bok choy and kale most of his diet consists of super worms dubia roaches and crickets which he loves live food is great but if you’re gonna go can’t or I should say if you’re not gonna go live you should go can do not go freeze-dried so this right here zoo Med can of super worms he loves it these are not dehydrated worms they’re fresh you pop open the can and whatever is not used you have to refrigerate because it will rot that’s how fresh it is as you can see the moisture max is at 65% which is great it has a lot of its nutrients in comparison to freeze-dried insects let’s move on to supplementation because that’s super important now as you remember me yapping about the UVB light and Pikachu getting enough vitamin d3 in calcium yes that’s right we’re gonna give him calcium so one of the supplements I give Pikachu is calcium with vitamin d3 I give this to him once a week I’m sorry I know once every two weeks I give him calcium without vitamin d3 five times a week and I give him a multivitamin two times a week so it’s super important that you give bearded dragon supplements to you know promote bone health and growth but do not overdo it so if you’re overdoing supplements here your bearded dragon can end up with calcium deposits in its organs and even on its scales and it can lead to premature death so again supplementation is important but within reason don’t overdo it riposte I’m sure you guys have heard of this he used to love this stuff when he was younger about a month ago two months ago he was eating veggie burger and something called a Posse grew up I add in nowhere if he just grew out of it he hates the stuff I’ll leave it in his tank fresh I’m jiggle it in front of his face he won’t need it he loves insects and dark leafy greens the last thing I want to talk about is this right here it’s an infrared thermometer okay this is great it works like a gun you literally point and shoot and like right here on his basking area 105 degrees I keep his basking area between 100 and hundred and ten and the cool side of his tank between 70 and 80 degrees super convenient I also have a thermometer that is inside the enclosure but unfortunately after like two-and-a-half months it died on me so I’m gonna replace it with a manual one that’s not battery-powered this is also a hygrometer so it measures humidity but in a way it’s kind of foolish to do because I don’t see the point in measuring the humidity right under the basking spot so having two of these would probably be better because the humidity on this side is definitely gonna be a lot that’s gonna be higher than the humidity right under the basket limb okay so look this is a minimalistic setup it is the opposite of a bioactive setup and we’re goin bioactive tomorrow for it works better for me if I o active setup for you for you people who don’t know it’s a setup and an environment that takes care of itself it has a substrate that is natural for the bearded dragon it has a cleanup crew that cleans up the excrement of the bearded dragon that cleanup crews made of funguses it’s made of bacteria isopods and spring tails I got it from the bio do calm and we’re gonna be doing that tomorrow now when you build an enclosure you can either go minimalistic like this which is affordable your bearded dragon could still thrive in it or you can go bioactive which is more money up front but it will sustain itself and in my opinion looks better do not go in between so don’t put like a loose substrate like a certain type of dirt or sand in the tank which I wouldn’t do anyway and then not have any live plants or not have anything to help sustain itself keep it simple that’s basically my advice if you like this setup let me know in the comments section below if you don’t like this setup and have a better setup let me know in the comment section below I’d love to hear from you and I’d love to talk about it check the description for any links if you are interested in any of these products and I’m looking forward to seeing you in the next video take it easy and have a great day say bye Pikachu
