Loose Skin and Losing Hair on Keto? Let’s Talk…..


and good morning i’m que sigue Rango of go kita with Casey and I talked about how I’ve lost 97 pounds once started the ketogenic diet and how others might be able to lose weight improve their health and regain control of their lives thank you so much for joining and today we’re going to talk about a topic that comes up very often and excuse me while I do some technical things here on my computer for those of you who don’t know let’s just start with that the ketogenic diet is one where you reduce your carbohydrate intake to a point where your liver no longer pushes out glucose which is sugar which when your liver does that your body will burn sugar for fuel once the sugar is cut off by way of reduced carbohydrate intake your body happily switches to burning ketones or fat for fuel that’s what the ketogenic diet is rule of thumb is for most people 20 total grams of carbohydrate a day or fewer will get you there eat the fat that comes along with your protein choices don’t eat if you’re not hungry and stop when you’re satisfied not full but satisfied that’s the ketogenic diet in a nutshell you should part an expression because nuts are not really on the foodless that one wants to follow up beginning certainly so good morning good morning and I will trust you guys to let me know if you cannot hear me because I’m not my right now a question that comes up often is what about losing weight and you know people have heard that you lose weight and you start to look a lot older jiggle your face kind of looks gaunt or drawn painting skin and the second question that comes up a lot is what about you know thinning hair I can only speak to my experiences okay and my understanding based on what I’ve read in conversations I’ve had with people you know I’ve lost a substantial amount of weight and the substantial percentage of my body weight for my – fight one and a half by one and a half so item not eat old person and I’ve lost 97 pounds that is more of them a pound per vertical inch of height so I was a perfectly round person if you go to my blog or some of my videos you can see before photos and I was almost spherical so I had a lot of skin plus I’ve had you know three children second one he was over he was a big kid I had a hysterectomy when I was about 30 and it was not the time where they go ahead with the laparoscope it was you know I was cut hip to hip so I should have a lot of hanging skin I don’t I have kind of crepey skin on my belly um you know my arms if I showing you an Achilles because it’s um the time delay but you can see my arms I’m not you know I don’t I don’t have Michelle Obama arms I don’t have the arms of a taught you know athlete but I’m you know a white-haired grandmother um this is not dissimilar to what I have on my tummy there’s more flesh on my tummy because there’s more skin but it’s it’s kind of like that it’s crazy why would this be I don’t have an answer for that it could be one of many factors it could be a combination of them all it could be genetics it’s just way I am savories and I have blue eyes could be genetics it could be that my weight loss while substantially was gradual no I don’t say swallow it was gradual the first year I think I lost 47 pounds which is less than account of me and I was thrilled with that no problem for me it could be that that I well I you know I’m not as Sun worshiper I enjoy being outside but I you know I did not spend years in the Sun could be bad it could be that my level of crepeiness would be awful for someone else so maybe I’m not that great at this maybe my skin is bad my face is wrinkled I burned them all but I am what I am some people will say oh it’s a toughie G or autophagy which is a recent Nobel Prize winner for his research on out of Ag or Saji which is the process by which cells will kind of consume themselves as theirs as there are dead cells the other cells become it’s obviously very complicated but we’ll take up that energy and essentially review themselves and people say oh that’s why it’s because you because you’re fasting and that’s what’s supposed to be I don’t fast intermittently or otherwise does it mean that a top Vegeta or also kg however you want to pronounce it is not at work I just simply don’t know the answer to that question I think people often on a number of topics like to take a fact and explode it out to a broad answer nothing there’s too much going on for that um I don’t push back I don’t toss back the ton of water which is must be very good for your skin I have water right here right now because I like it kind of dry mouth it’s just water with some lime in it but I drink coffee most of the morning and I’ve been switched to something else later in the day but a little water so all the things that you’re supposed to do for your skin I don’t really do them there is a period that I heard from an esthetician at do but it was interesting she recognized that as through the clinic she’s not a doctor but she has dealt with people with with skin issues everything from you know trauma to post surgical starting to fire to skin conditions to people who have excuse me hanging skin after weight loss surgery bariatric surgery and then those patients who have come in having lost a great deal of weight following the ketogenic diet and she said sure that there was a difference to what I just you know just on a day-to-day basis that those who lost the weight even if it was a substantial event ugly following the ketogenic diet that our skin quality was simply different it did not have the folds she didn’t know the answer to why but she had a thought because the ketogenic diet is is essentially an anti-inflammatory diet I mean it has an anti-inflammatory effect on our bodies because when you’re burning glucose that can be quite inflammatory those of you who are following a well formulated ketogenic diet often find that your your joint pain disappears or it dissipates that acid reflux goes away that other issues that are associated with inflammation internal inflammation are really greatly help well skin isn’t working it’s our largest organ and she had a theory that maybe the anti-inflammatory properties of the ketogenic diet had something to do to that who knows and until someone can show some randomized controlled studies that are peer-reviewed and really showed the answer I don’t know that anybody knows I can tell you from my experience um I would have thought if someone had said you’re going to lose this amount of weight I would have expected to have a tripping hazard on my belly but as far as loose skin gets and I simply don’t but let’s take this one step further I I’ve been contacted by people who say I really need you about the skin because I don’t want to lose a bunch of weight and then find that I have skin and look older and my response to that is your priorities need to be your priorities so I can’t tell you what will happen with you but it bets the question seriously seriously you’d rather be at risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease and everything else that goes along with with when you’re burning glucose for fuel when you’re up on a high carb diet and not to mention being overweight you’d rather all of those things rather than looking older first of all you’re going to look older eventually anyway if you weren’t given the gift of growing older we all know the famous quote from Mark Twain I don’t mind going older it is preferable to the alternative it also begs the question who are you trying to please here who you know if you never saw your own reflection do you care whether you’ve got wrinkles are you trying to make someone else happy and maybe that needs to be Mitch and then our thought process as well I don’t know again you want to feel as good as you can and for many people that means looking as good as you can and we’re all a little bit thing you know I’m sitting here with makeup on no one in my camera ain’t gonna be just right so there’s nothing wrong with that and I am going to quickly jump in with a plug for patreon patrons we had a discussion about this and one of the patrons we were talking about the conversation was about really who are you trying to please and what about wrinkles and things and when new people’s is very honest to say listen I’m gonna do it all I want you to do it all and she said she nurses curtain she they love each other dearly should they’re so different and I think the example she used is that that this patron wanted to live to be a hundred and fifteen and the last dollar she spent might be on mascara whereas the last doll her sister spent might be on a dog so whatever makes you happy but do ask yourself what what does happen so you lose weight and you have the live skin is that a trade-off you’re worth if that’s worth to you and Harold okay there’s another thing that I did want to come after this we talked about that this comes up a lot too oh my gosh my hair is shedding oh my gosh do I need to introduce carbs back in no really our hair sheds anyway we know this and sometimes because it sheds in zones which are alternating things patches areas and sometimes all the zones kind of get on the same schedule and it feels like your hair is really getting thin that’s perfectly normal but there is also something called telogen effluvium which can happen with any dietary or shock to the system let’s put it this way you can have surgery and if you’re under anesthesia shock to the system your hair can thin out or did it regulate it it goes back to regulate you change up your dietary protocol these are going low carb or low fat or whatever it might be that can be a shock to the system an emotional shock to the system can do the same thing so there is no reason that following a well formulated ketogenic diet will have any more effect on the thickness of your hair then there would have been anyway some of us have spinner error minor that seems to keep getting shorter has nothing to do with the diet Bible so don’t don’t fret over that now if you have excessive shedding you don’t want to go to a dermatologist and see if you have that latisha or something like that but do keep in mind that for the most part just keep doing you know keep following their protocol and things self-regulate skin rashes itself some people have what they refer to as the kibo rash I did not experience that am i understanding that of respected clinicians will come say well I’ve heard of it and I believe that people experience it but they don’t really have an explanation again skin is an organ and I don’t know this is a mess if changing our diet and kind of ridding our body of all that glucose and teasy at rate analogy detoxifying and it’s pushing those toxins out many people report that their ongoing skin conditions eczema psoriasis etc actually are alleviated when they follow a well formulated ketogenic diet when they are learning ketones are burning fat for fuel as a per opposed to burning glucose or sugar and they will say n if if for any reason they you know they have struggles which is what we call it on patreon when you struggle and then you stumble so it’s trouble if they do have you they accidentally eat too many carbs their skin will tell them about it and they’ll break out I think that i’m cholena is in the houses you might actually be able to talk to that um hi Rosa right where I said losing my hair or looking out like a baby bird lol couldn’t care less I switched to a short haircut it’s just not as important again there you go and keep in mind all hair thins as we get older anyway know there are things that continued to happen because we are human beings I’d like to say you can be on a well-formulated ketogenic diet and you still might get a flat tire on the way to work it doesn’t fix everything then it’s a very healthful way of eating um it’s very nutrient-dense take a quick look at the USDA food database and compare protein that comes you chicken with the skin and beef with the fat and everything else with romaine lettuce there’s a lot more nutrients than you in the protein sources okay Colleen hey Colleen writes eczema shows up overnight if I eat too many carbs thank you for sharing that a lot of people have said have said that I have shared that okay I am going to again give a quick little gonna say that does anyone have a question Tracy writes I lost 50 on keto so far but hair really thinning out on top I’m taking supplements and still happening why it can take several months to get through the shock it can take a few months for it to start and then it can take a few months to get through again go to a dermatologist or have your you know if it’s really bothersome to you yeah have your blood check fruit vitamins and minerals but this is and make sure that you’re not reducing you know eat doesn’t eat just tightly and eat if you’re hungry I am NOT a fan of arbitrarily not eating I’m not a fan of that I think it’s a logical for one thing I think that in my opinion and I have tried this a several experimenting when you arbitrarily don’t eat if you are actually empty and hungry empty and hungry being as opposed to peckish which is a pity you know that you can maintain for hours but then you get to the food I better eat one thing for me I started having intrusive thoughts for food you get too hungry it’s all you can think about which is what we did on the you know move more eat less diet what I could think about was food I want to think about food anymore it’s not the boss of me which I might get some more of those t-shirts in I’ve had it with Weston they sold out in a minute just says food is not the positive eight months ryoya motion Thank You anyone else using prenatal vitamins for a supplement now are using prenatal vitamins just as a general rule or are you crackers I don’t know I can’t speak to that and I wouldn’t want to talk about pregnancy and keto other than my understanding is there’s no were no reason to avoid it you don’t have to eat for two um that’s a myth but maybe an extra number it’s a couple hundred calories a day but you will wanted to check check that out Robin McGrath fiery why do I get warm after eating you know I experienced that at the beginning for the first several months out report it but I used to say I don’t know about ketogenic but I think this is a thermogenic died because I would get very warm I don’t know as we as we um depending on your stage in life as we mobilize fat cells for fuel keep in mind that fat cells have more than just fat in them they have hormones ooh they have trike strides in them they have all sorts of components in them and I have heard that as these fat cells are mobilized and the say the estrogen is that one you know it can have that effect so see what happens in I think that normalizes after time as well and Rosa writes I’m cold all the time I’ve gotten to roast the stage I am usually cold all the time which is really funny because I’m used to run warmer than everyone because I assume because I had a fat on 24/7 but now I feel it’s really funny have this little tiny act in the night mitt for myself really fit and I walk when Alice where they presented cold of course who knows again I mean I’m old birth this might have happened anyway thermogenic yeah Kevin a little buddy boricua and that means Puerto Rican yo is that correct our daughter’s very best friend is okay any other questions that I might be able to answer maybe some of you can answer for them so to triglycerides 64 my HDL 98 um my blood sugar 66 my blood pressure 110 over 70 I am the very definition of a healthy person which I wasn’t before anyway when she’s checking me out she’s a bleep all right where’s your easy spin said I have seen a lot of people who’ve lost a lot of weight I don’t know where it is so I had no hanging skin I had prayed this day I don’t know why that is I will not chalk it up to auto-pay gene okay Joni does dry fasting help the blue skin I’m gonna tell you dry fasting does that mean don’t eat or drink anything I cannot get behind that and no no why would it people like to quote autophagy I don’t know about that I mean it’s something that happens but in relation to dry to painting skin and to say don’t eat and don’t drink please don’t do that please don’t do that if you go for 24 48 hours without eating you are going to start to lose any muscle mass it’s been pretty well documented I II am NOT a fan and certainly don’t deprive you but you know what they call that they call that torture in some places don’t see that dry brushing is one thing dry fasting knew that okay the woman who was who said that she had the theory about the anti-inflammatory component of the diet someone asked what what what do you think are the best things to do for skin then she’s an aesthetician dry brushing which is just exactly what it sounds like get a brush and you can get those brushes and rinse and I do do it when I remember I don’t know if you brush brush brush your skin a few strokes towards your heart so up your arms this way up your legs towards your heart up their belly torture heart down your chest towards her and it just come exfoliates doesn’t it she did say no hot showers I take steaming showers so I don’t follow that my skin regime regime on my face is pretty basic I walk my face with Neutrogena and then I scrub it with baking soda I could example baking soda here in a cream it up Neutrogena and a scrub scrub scrub and wash it off and then I put petroleum jelly on it so I not highfalutin um Kim Makoi asks are all nuts basic basically off-limits if you look at the food list and you can run the food unless the recommended food list everywhere you can go to my blog and see the food list I followed do as you like it’s the cruelest I follow nuts are not on it and of course that includes not nut flours for so-called alternative flours not on there but one thing they are calorically dense they are not card for your even bloke mark and a little bit of that balloon coming I think of serving Obamas like 10 almonds that are very easy to mindlessly overview there they’re good I mean they have good nutrients but it’s one of those things where they’re very easy to mindlessly ovary most foods on the food was can’t mindlessly overly very difficult to overeat boiled eggs mindlessly because use three images where that anymore um do what works for you I tend to avoid them my husband can tolerate them but even he has cut back my husband has been weight stable he’s Eddie’s ideal perfectly he’s in great shape but as he’s getting older his par tolerance is reducing that is keep in mind that the level of carb carbohydrate tolerance which is really response to insulin is can be very different depending on your gender your age your body composition your level of insulin resistance some of us become pretty insulin resistant early I did in my mid-20s I’m from a long line of type 2 and type 1 diabetics now type 1 diabetic is not insulin resistant they don’t have any but almost everybody else in my family is a type 2 diabetic eventually so do what works for you but 20 total grams a day or fewer is pretty much baseline for most people the analogy I like to use is for most human beings if you are in an ambient temperature of 72 degrees and low humidity you’re pretty much comfortable pretty much pretty much everybody is but even within that there will be some people who neither fall on because they’re chilly and some people who are Fanning themselves because they’re warm but those are the extremes on the outside of the curve so find what works better 20 grams total not net a day or fewer which means you can have zero will pretty much work for everyone eat fatty sources of protein this is not a high-fat type you’re not looking to cram in fat you eat the thought that comes along with your protein what does that mean eggs with your yolks chicken with the skin turkey with the skin lamb with the fat sausage bacon chuck roast with the fat instead of celery yarn which is very lean and then some bits you know avocado which is higher in fat but not unlimited amounts baba kado they won a couple of tablespoons of heavy cream if you wish a couple of tablespoons of mayonnaise and maybe a couple of ounces of cheese but the thing is you’ll find that very soon less and less food get you further and further it’s the wonder of the protocol ultimately your energy requirements how much how much energy your body needs to get through a day will terminate will determine what your energy intake should be so listen to your body and keep in mind that your body taps its energy from what you put in your mouth and what you carry on your back side or your thighs or one of your many Chin’s and I’m not saying that as it did go look at my before pictures okay it’s not a dig what were we saying that Victor was last week I said something about you know one of those Chin’s is just all those breakfast you ate before when you really did want breakfast sunny Kristin Lou Monday writes can taking progesterone away from me I’m so sorry can taking progesterone and testosterone keep you from losing weight on keto I cannot speak to that I have to no idea um research Jackie ever Steen who is very well-versed on weight management and hormones she’s been studying this forever just Google Jackie ever seen in hormones weight loss but I cannot speak to that by the way if if you are getting you know what I’m gonna back up what I was just gonna say a Debbie Smith stoped do you recommend frying probiotics no no I mean do what you want to do but all of our bodies really are fascinating machines that really know what to do themselves eat a well-formulated diet burning fuel that our bodies were well designed to eat many people find that when they do this their IBS and inflammatory bowel syndrome dissipates I myself suffer suffer from Col ulcerative colitis everything self-regulates for me do what you want to do but no but you can eat things like um fermented foods I wouldn’t go overboard if you like and take them sauerkraut yogurt pickles these are fermented things whatever had to have a high acid content and they are part of the process remember just you know getting there oh that’s nice Denise writes I’m listening to my body and you also thank you so much and thanks to patrons for allowing me to have time to make some videos no need for yogurt don’t have to have it we I make it around to your book I don’t you know we don’t have it every day my husband likes it he needs more than I do um Debbie to shave Rights of torture I am four months in if it’s 22 pounds but people are saying you’ve lost a lot of weight and I’m shrinking not losing on the scale it just amazes me how this works so different than anything else it is different than anything else and people have trouble believing that’s because it’s unbelievable but it does work and losing inches without losing weight is a thing I for myself I believe that I have actually increased my lean mass I am fairly muscular for a woman my age and at my activity level I go to the gym I can do some you know weight training but I am NOT regimented about it I don’t press it too much I do three sets of whatever I’m doing to exhaustion it’s that I might not forget the doctor for two weeks but I believe that this is a very beneficial way to eat particularly as we get older and materially if we are female um hold on you just want to shout to the winds I’ve lost 30 pounds in the last two months and before I can never budge the scale thank you for saying that that you’ve lost and you didn’t qualify it by saying I’ve only lost one and I have a lot of way to go and brace what you’ve done and you know when when you hear when I read people that say I’ve only lost 5 pounds in a month my my now my standard comeback is really if it was the other way would you say I’ve only put on five pounds in a month no set the correct expectation this is not a weight loss protocol it’s a fat-burning protocol burning body fat is plate if you’re consuming all the dietary fat you want I eat bulletproof coffee fat bombs loading up on you know if you’re eating half a cup of mayonnaise every day on top of sour cream on top of ranch dressing on top of it then you you you know your body is going to access the dietary fat first it gets first in line but but gradual weight loss is weight loss so congratulations to those of you who are embracing that Jill Jew mate says definitely helped me rid of IBS dirt and lowered my lipids and blood pressure bingo okay there’s victory and and also keep in mind that it might keep in mind that if you are ill on the inside meaning there’s a lot going on there that you may not even be in there a lot of inflammation a lot of repair work that needs to be done the the scale may not move as fast but it’s the the analogy I like is is so if if there is a house and orders have been living in it and so there’s just junk hidden there from wall to wall floor to ceiling I have been in those houses in my previous career you know the first thing you gotta do is you know you don’t call in the decorator right away first of all you gotta get them to eat out you’ve got to get the room is cleared then you’ve got to get rid of the mold then you’ve got to pull up the hardened carpets that are in the infested the fleet you’ve got take care of all that then you start worrying about painting and new windows and furniture placement if your body is very ill you’ve got to get rid of it bringing the decorator which brings us back to this loose skin make yourself feel as good as you can if you are someone that is cannot abide a wrinkle or a sound or a droop and you feel you want your outside to feel like you’re inside fantastic if you are someone who would rather if your priority is not having a loose skin or face wrinkles and you’re okay with being overweight and diabetic that’s fine too hopefully many of us can be happy with the wrinkles and the stars not stars at that stars I put divots and things I’ve been through a lot it has nothing to with a ketogenic diet and we actually ask ourselves who are we trying to please if I look like a 60 year old what’s wrong with that I don’t need to look like a 40 year old one thing soon my daughter’s gonna be 40 I don’t need to look like my daughter sister Jun that close I’m sorry sweetie in that close but what’s wrong with looking like who we are battle scars and all who were we trying to please if we lived in a world of people who could not see us if they were if everyone was blind would we care about our weakness if we were blind could we care about our English if we lived on a desert island by ourselves would we care about our limits I don’t care about my wrinkles I don’t love them I mean I go back and forth but how lovely mate loves me always has so one of the great things about being on the ketogenic diet is sometimes we start to just feel better about yourself in general because you feel better you don’t feel like the best is behind you I feel up the best is in front of me it sounds cliche but it’s the truth I went from not necessarily wanting to live for the next 40 years because they didn’t want to feel like that for 40 years to what’s going to happen the next 40 years wait if I can do this you can do this please go look at my before pictures not that I’m Gina Lollobrigida right now but I’m not who
