Ketogenic Diet: Silicon Valley’s New Body-Hacking Obsession | CNBC

[Music] it seems like every VC I know is experimenting with low carbohydrate diets and/or ketogenic diets so low carb moderate protein high fat diet butters things such as nuts vegetables and meat and now you add in fat there’s a lot more almonds a lot more eggs a lot more coffee a lot more fish breakfast is eggs and bacon dinner salmon is a terrific one and then on the vegetable side my go-to vegetables now are salads sauteed spinach or broccoli the main thing is that you have to cut out sugars which means any type of carbohydrate so you have to be careful with fruit you have to be careful with certain types of vegetables and you certainly can’t eat things like bread and pasta there are some vegetables that are starchy vegetables that you don’t do carrots corn beets or the primary ones sandwiches were cut completely out fruits like bananas we cut out a big issue for me is I can’t have ice cream and chocolate chip cookies one colleague did not make it long he’s too much in love with carbs and a particular alcoholic Carmen you walked by a plate of cookies or a bowl of chips and it’s torture the weight loss is actually quite dramatic for instance for me the first week I was on it I lost seven pounds I lost around 15 pounds I’ve lost about 10 pounds at the beginning of changing my diet to a ketogenic diet I just feel awful I get really bad headaches I’m generally in a bad mood and I’m tired but once my body adjusts I end up feeling much better I have found for me that my energy is much more level and I’m much less hungry my appetite was lower I frankly slept better it’s definitely something where I think the benefits outweigh the costs [Music] type 2 diabetes is an enormous problem in the United States and one that is growing very rapidly the question as to whether you know Verta is a promising way to treat Type 2 diabetes I think the answer is certainly yes the harder question is can someone sustain a ketogenic diet it’s possible to sustain it over the long term but it requires an immense amount of willpower and self-control I think for most people it’s a hard diet to do over very long stretches of time hey there thanks for checking out CNBC on YouTube be sure to subscribe to stay up-to-date on all of the day’s biggest stories you can also click on any of the videos around me to watch the latest from CNBC thanks for watching
